What does a personal trainer do?

Personal trainers are fitness professionals who help people achieve their health and fitness goals. They can work with clients one-on-one or in small groups. Their responsibilities include:

 

  • Goal setting: Helping clients identify short and long-term goals

  • Fitness assessment: Evaluating a client's strengths and weaknesses, health indicators, and conditions

  • Program design: Creating customized exercise programs that fit the client's needs

  • Instruction: Teaching clients how to safely and effectively follow their programs, including demonstrating proper form and posture

We also have decades of practical personal training experience and deep expertise in proven effective science-based training methodologies, modalities, and protocols. How often should I train with a personal trainer?

People always ask me "How many personal training sessions do I need each week?" I recommend at least three personal training sessions per week and then try to do workouts on the off days. The more you do, the quicker you will reach your end goal, however, it depends on your budget and what you can afford. But generally speaking, I like to work with my clients 3-4 times per week for best results. 4 or more sessions per week is best as it tips the 7-day week in your favor.

In terms of how many sessions you will need to reach your goal, that is based on how many times per week you work out in total. I shoot for 90 days for my clients to achieve their goals because it puts a sense of urgency into every session to help maximize results.

What qualifications should I look for in a personal trainer?

When choosing a personal trainer in Chicago, it's important to look for someone with appropriate NCCA-accredited personal trainer certifications, such as:

My team of trainers and I hold ACE, NASM, ACSM, and ISSA.  We also subcontract some of our training work to a specialized coach in Chicago with a CSCS (Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist) certification.

My yoga instructors are Yoga Alliance 500 Hours Certified.

My Pilates instructors are Certified Pilates Instructors.
